Happy Mother’s Day Everyone

SOME THOUGHTS ON MOTHERHOOD

Somebody said it takes about six weeks to get back to normal after you’ve had a baby… that somebody doesn’t know that once you’re a mother, “normal” is history.

Somebody said you learn how to be a mother by instinct… that somebody never took a three-year-old shopping.

Somebody said being a mother is boring… that somebody never rode in a car driven by a teenager with a driver’s permit.

Somebody said if you’re a “good” mother, your child will “turn out good”… that somebody thinks a child comes with directions and a guarantee.

Somebody said “good” mothers never raise their voices… that somebody never came out the back door just in time to see her child hit a golf ball through the neighbor’s kitchen window.

Somebody said you don’t need an education to be a mother… that somebody never helped a fourth grader with his math.

Somebody said you can’t love the fifth child as much as you love the first… that somebody doesn’t have five children.

Somebody said a mother can find all the answers to her child-rearing questions in the books… that somebody never had a child stuff beans up his nose or in his ears.

Somebody said the hardest part of being a mother is labor and delivery… that somebody never watched her “baby” get on the bus for the first day of kindergarten… or on a plane headed for military “boot camp.”

Somebody said a mother can do her job with her eyes closed and one hand tied behind her back… that somebody never organized seven giggling Brownies to sell cookies.

Somebody said a mother can stop worrying after her child gets married… that somebody doesn’t know that marriage adds a new son or daughter-in-law to a mother’s heartstrings.

Somebody said a mother’s job is done when her last child leaves home… that somebody never had grandchildren.

Somebody said your mother knows you love her, so you don’t need to tell her… that somebody isn’t a mother.

A Mother’s a job is like her love - it never ends.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY… to every Mother on every day of the year!

Friday’s 40-or-less Photo Challenge

Inspired by what you see and how you interpret the picture, write:

  • - A 40-or-less-word caption
  • - A 40-or-less-word title
  • - A 40-or-less-word post
  • - A 40-or-less-word poem
  • - 40 or less syllables of either!

Short…sweet…and hopefully a lot of fun!

The view is so much better above the clouds!

Friday 40 or less Photo Challenge

I first saw this new meme at Red Pens & Diapers. This is the first edition of Pensieve’s latest writing challenge. The premise of the meme is she takes a photo and urges her readers to write 40 something or less words about the picture. Syllables? Words? It’s up to us. Check out her site for more 40 or Less submissions. I loved the picture so I decided to play along this week. Of course I am a day late.

YES! There is life after winter!

Catching Up with Friday Feast & Share a Site Saturday

I can hardly believe it is Sunday evening at 8:30pm! Where has the weekend gone? I know I have been very tired this past week, so much so that it has given me pause for concern enough to actually make a doctor’s appointment, and I was so thankful for the weekend just to take a breather, but geez, where did the weekend go?!? Well better late than never, as my grandmother used to say. So without further ado, but with sincere apologies for my tardiness, I present:

Appetizer: Name one person you can fully trust. I am blessed to actually have three people in my life that a feel I can fully trust; my father, my son and my best friend.
Soup: What do you like about your hometown? I like the safety that comes from a rural community. Crime is at a minimum here, with only an occassional murder every 10-15 years or so. Although we normally lock our doors at night and when we go away, it is not a major concern if we forget.
Salad: Share a moment you really love. The first that came to mind was the birth of Caleb, my grandson. I was permitted to be in the birthing suite and had a “ring-side seat” for his entrance into this world. Although I have had six pregancies, this experience gave me a total different perspective on the miracle of childbirth. It is truly a site to behold - only the Lord could have designed this!
Main Course: Share something special about your loved one. I am currently unattached and I am assuming this refers to either a spouse, boyfriend or significant other. But being the rebel without a cause, I will put my own spin on this and share something special about the man I do live with and love very much - my father. My father is a meat and potatoes man. His idea of a meal consists of a serving of meat and some type of potato. I can also have a salad or other vegetables or fruits, but the man isn’t happy without his daily dose of meat and potatoes.
Dessert: What product can you not live without? Noxema to wash my face with and Oil of Olay lotion for moisturizing. I have used both faithfully more than 99% of every morning of my life since 1979.

Last week I shared five friends’ blogs that participate in my other blog/meme, Slice of Life Sunday, as contributing writers. I want to share a few more new comers to my writitng project this week.

Texas Tanya is a mother of two boys who came into their home as foster children and won over the love of Tanya and her hubby to become their adopted children. Tanya has a wonderful way of telling the tales of two boys, pets and a boundless concern for others. I was drawn into her blog by her heading: As a parent, the days are long . . . but the years are short.  As a grandparent, I completely agree with her statement!

This, That & the Other Thing is an interesting baby boomer, aka Irishcoda, who has a whole housefull of adventures to write about. She has a large family of 5 children and 5 grandchildren and a whole mess of cats! She shares many wonderful pictures of her family and their adventures. She also enjoys participating in several memes and I am so pleased she has chosen to paritcipate in Slice of Life Sunday. In addition to TT &tOT, she also is the webmaster for Snapshot Memories, where she has taken to posting her slice of life stories.

My Name is Danielle is a psychology professor and also provides counseling for pre-school children through different Florida agencies. She is the mother of a teenage daughter - to which I give all my sympathies! Danielle has been writing for sometime and has as an extra on her blog of her writings from The Bipolar Diaries, which was her first blog. I became very excited to have Danielle as a contributing writer for Slice of Life Sundays when I read in her “about me” that she believes “everything in our lives is just ‘a matter of perspective’.” This is the goal of Slice of Life Sunday - to put the pieces of our lives into perspective.

I was hoping to get everyone else on this week but it is now 10pm ( as usual I could not simply log into the above blogs to copy their address without staying for a visit) and I must get to bed.

The Ultimate Blog Party!

Ultimate Blog Party 2008

I have seen this banner, or versions of it, on several blogs for the past several weeks. I paid a visit to the site to find out what all the hoopla was about and learned that twins sisters, Susan and Janice, from the blog 5 Minutes for Mom, are hosting this online party that so far has well over 1000 party-goers! Cool beans! Basically the party is all about bloggers (they are primarily targeting stay-at-home-moms, but I’m crashing their party) getting to know one another by visiting each others sites. Of course there are prizes, lots of prizes to be won. So without further ado, please help yourself to cup of coffee (I do have wine and I think a couple of beers in the frig) and grab some cheese & crackers and make yourself comfortable . . .

I am a mid-50’s, working 9-5′er grandmother of 5; Torrey, Colton, Caleb, Maggi, and Brevin. I was very fortunate to have raised 2 children, a son Jamie and a daughter Kelli. I say fortunate because I had a difficult time completing pregnancies, as I had six. I still find it amazing that my children are grown and even my grandchildren are growing faster than I would like. Torrey will be driving this year - Lord have mercy on us all! Actually she is a wonderful girl, very down-to-earth, loving and caring, just not always the most focused when it comes to details. I am known as the “science fair grandma” as I love to help my grandchildren with their science fair projects. If you need any tips for project ideas, just ask.

I began blogging in late December of last year. I have enjoyed getting to know other bloggers and participating in memes. I love to write, especially about things that have happened throughout my life. You may want to check out the posts under my categories of Writer’s Island, Sunday Scribblings and Grandma’s Wisdom to get a feel for who I am. Some would say I have had more than my share of hard times, and I suppose they are correct, but I have lived through them and as my grandmother would say, “if it doesn’t kill you it will make you stronger.” So I am a much stronger person today, and getting stronger everyday.

I live in rural Holmes County, Ohio - home to the largest settlement of Amish in the world. For those who do not know about Amish, it is easier to describe them as kin to Quakers. Because of the facination to the Amish lifestyle (no electric, no inside toilets, their dress, no refrigerators, etc), Holmes County is the second largest tourist attraction in Ohio. Thus, a large percentage of our county’s economy is based on tourism. We have wonderful cheese houses, bakeries, craft stores, antique shops, quality furniture stores and many restaurants. If you are searching for new place for a family vacation, Holmes County would be a great trip. We have Amish farms where your children can pet farm animals and take buggy rides. We even have two exotic animal safari-type farms. Holmes County is a great place to visit.

In addition to this blog, I am getting ready to debut a second one. It will be a weekly meme featuring writings from people just like you about different pieces of your life. These pieces are things like going to the prom, a fight disagreement with your husband, first day of school, etc. The blog is called Slice of Life Sunday and it will be up and running by March 23rd. Basically, each week I will list three life events and you may choose one (or more) to write about. Besides being a regular meme, my goal is to take all the writings I receive and turn them into a book (and yes, I will share any monies I make on my book with those who submit writings). In addition to the writings, this blog will also feature information and recipies for all kinds of pies. Anyone who has ever left a comment on my blog will receive an official announcement and invitation to join in.

I also want to say Happy Birthday to a dear blogging friend, Phyl at Scrappy and Happy in Ohio. She is having a birthday give-away you don’t want to miss!
Act quickly! This Give-A-Way ends at 9:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. For more information, click the image.

I hope you enjoyed your visit. Please come back and “set a spell.” Have fun blog-hopping through The Ultimate Blog Party!

Time for a Sunday Drive

I usually spend my weekends writing entries for Writer’s Island, Know and Tell Friday, Sunday Scribblings, and Thursday Thirteen. I have completed one of these but have since decided I need a break. It is actually getting warmer outside and I don’t want to miss even a minute of feeling the sun on my face. So I am going to talk my dad into going for a Sunday drive. You know the kind - just get in the car and drive, sometimes you stop into visit someone if they are home and sometimes you just drive around enjoying the countryside. Sooooo, I am off. I hope you enjoy your Sunday! Blessings, Cricket

I’m it! But not for long!

2. I recently learned how to play dominoes and I love it!

3. I am a night owl by nature.

4. I can’t sing, but I love music - even my humming is off-key.

5. I met Elvis in 1969 and plan to write a post about this monumental event in my life as soon as my ex gives me copies of our pictures.

6. I have the absolute worst looking fingernails. I do not care for them on a ragular basis like most females.

7. My hair is getting very thin on top, so thin I am actually considering checking into hair replacement options.

I would love to learn some weird or random facts about:

One-Word-Only Meme

Phyllis has tagged me for a very interesting meme. The object is to answer each of the following with only one word. Geez! she has given me this challenge - has she not read my 2000+ word essay on a one word prompt: magic! - one word answers - from me? This will be a challenge! LOL LOL Here I go…

Plus, I did not eat the whole buffet, I just ate at a buffet! And I should clarify I do not want a huge farm with tractors and combines and the such, just a little 10-20 acres with a small barn and a chicken house so I can have brown eggs without paying $2.62 a dozen for them. Plus, I was not sure if I should answer whether I like muffins or list a type I did like. Hmmm…I wonder if I should have listed the kind I don’t like.  And I am a bit concerned about whether I cheated with the answer to #26. I put a hyphen and I don’t think there really is supposed to be a hyphen, but for it to be one word and one word only - well what’s a writer-holic girl like me supposed to do? Whew - now I feel better!!! LOL

I am tagging you, yes you, the person reading this right now to do this meme. Copy the following and remember, only one word for each prompt. LOL

Reflections: What I never anticipated

reflections.jpg

I saw this wonderful picture on Scrappy and Happy in Ohio’s blog. I was immediately moved by the truth it represented, as we seldom see ourselves as others see us.

I shared with a friend not long ago that I was in a clothing store and as I casually glanced in the direction of a full-length mirror I had to do a double take! I did not recognize the woman staring back at me. In the mirror was a woman that my friends and acquaintances must see everyday; a 56 year old, grossly overweight grandmother who obviously lives a very sedimentary lifestyle. What a surprise, ahhh shock is more the word, this experience was for me. First, I do not feel 56, or grossly overweight for that matter. I mean, I see old, grossly overweight people at the supermarket who ride around in those carts to get their groceries, and the ones who don’t, stand in the check-out line with sweat rolling off their brow. That is not me. Ok, Ok so sometimes it does aggravate me that I can’t wallpaper a room like I used to and I can’t stand the heat of the summer like I used to, but geez, come on, can that person in the mirror really be me?

I have spent much time since “the mirror incident” reflecting on what I saw and pondering over life choices I have made  that allowed such a transformation to occur. I guess I should point out that I was the teenager who never gained an ounce regardless of what she ate. I weighed 99 pounds on my wedding day and I was 6 months pregnant at the time! So, to transform from a hip chick to a hippy old lady, well to say it is very dis-concerning is an understatement.

After I saw Phyl’s blog picture, I got an idea to begin a Reflections Tag. The rules are very basic. First, right click on the reflections picture to save to your picture file for uploading. Then after listing the rules, copy the following and paste in a post along with the picture on your blog (be sure to link my blog address to Cricket’s Hearth in the description), and tag 5 blogging friends to reflect on their lives:

Cricket’s Hearth has initiated a tag called Reflections.  The goal is to look back on your life and list 5 negative things you never anticipated happening, followed by 5 positive things you never anticipated happening in your life. Take your time and truly reflect on the top five in each category. When finished, complete this statement: Considering the negatives and the positives in my life, _____________.

Reflections of Cricket’s Hearth

5 Negative Things I Never Anticipated Happening in My Life

1. I never dreamed my husband would molest our 11 year old daughter.

2. I never thought the American justice system would betray me the way it did.

3. I never thought my daughter would turn her back on me and choose to share her adult life with the father that destroyed our family.

4. Although I considered it many times, I never thought I would actually try to commit suicide.

5. I never thought anything would come between me and my best friend.

5 Positive Things I Never Anticipated Happening in My Life

1. For many years I denied the Lord existed and thought being “saved” was a theatrical performance of self-proclaimed Christians. I was wrong. Becoming saved was a life altering experience. I thank the Lord for sending the people he did at different times in my life to plant His seeds.

2. My first baby died shortly after birth and I had 3 more miscarriages before finally being able to have a daughter. I was blessed three years later, almost to the day, with a son. My son has been a rock in my life. He has so much common sense and compassion, I sometimes wonder if he was switched in the hospital.

3. My father was one of those “a man’s job is to work and put food on the table” type men who did not hug or kiss his children. He rarely even spoke to me as I was growing up. I never anticipated ever really getting to know him. We have lived together the past 10 years since my mother passed. It has been wonderful learning about his childhood with 12 brothers and sisters growing up poor on a small farm. I do understand why he was the kind of father he was, he was only repeating what he had learned.

4. I was a high school drop out due to an unplanned pregnancy followed by an unplanned marriage. I never thought I would ever have the opportunity to realize my childhood dream of going to college. When I was 42, in a self-pittying mood, I was complaining to my son about never being able to go to college. His response was a challenge, “why can’t you go now?’ My response was, “Because I’ll be 50 before I get a degree.” His reply, ” As I see it mom, you’re going to be 50 in eight years anyways, so you might as well be 50 with a degree as 50 without a degree.” Like I said, so much common sense! And so I went on to graduate 5 years later.

5. I always knew how important a grandmother is to their grandchildren, but I never realized how important grandchildren would be to me. I cherish each moment I get to spend with my grandchildren. They all are so different and it is so wonderful watching them grow. They give me hope for the future.

Considering the negatives and positives in my life, I clearly see how people have influenced my life and how I have allowed the negatives to outweigh the positives.

My 5 blogging friends I challenge for Reflection are:
